SHANKAR SHANMUGAM was born on 17 August 1963 in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. He completed his diploma in mechanical engineering from central polytechnic college before entering the film industry.

Shankar after that worked as assistant director near Chandrashekar Rao another two movies, (Azaad Desh Ke Gulam) 1990and (Nanbargal) 1991.
